Advantages
Benefits of Family Farms
Healthy & High Quality Produce
You know exactly where your food is coming from and what goes into it as well, which is super importrant. Also family farms doesn’t use a lot of harmful chemicals and they are better for soil sustaining. High soil quality leads to a high quality of food which is the main goal for any farmer.
Responsibility
Having a family farm teaches you and your kids about responsibility. Many duties on a family farm requires a lot of work and are time sensitive. This is a great way to learn how to be responsible and try to be better every day. Also working on a family farm can give you many opportunities for other future jobs and careers.
Learning Cause & Effect
It is often said that you reap what you saw when working on a family farm. When working on a family farm, you get a better sense and understanding of work in exchange for pay especially if you’re your own boss. This is why it is important to take good care of the crops and animals on the farm and get the best out of everything.

The Enthusiast
Meet
Susan Hudgens,
Local Farmer
Susan Hudgens is a 1st generator farmer and started their family farm back in 2007. Susan grew up on a farm and has always dreamed of having her own farm with animals and gardens. Gardening is therapeutic to her, so she wanted to make this dream come true. So she did. In the beginning the farm wasn’t very big, but just a few things for them to have. A year later they expanded to 1/2 an acre and they have continued to grow a little more for each year since then.
She is taking care of the farm with her 4 children. It is important to her to be able to teach them not only how to grow and care for it, but also know where their food is coming from. So each year they work together as a family to get their garden started. The age does not matter because there is always something to do and learn. By growing fresh produce, they want to help other families who may not have a place of their own or just not able to anymore.
Our goal is to teach our kids to be good stewards of the land , to help and be involved in our community and hopefully to continue the love of growing their own food for generations to come.We are very excited for our 2023 season as we have downsized on the animal part of the farm to focus more on the vegetation. Susan is also the manager of the Millport Farmers Market, which she spends countless hours on besides her lovely family farm.
