Benefits of Regernative Farming
Improve Soil Health
Stewart Farm uses compost tea made from cow manure as a staple natural fertilizer. Using compost tea, rather than applying composted manure directly to the soil , prevents further propagation of weeds. Lann often adds a bit of molasses to the compost tea to increase the good biom, which is extremely beneficial to plants and soil. Over seeding of pastures is another important component with regenerative farming.
Increase Nutritional Value
Better soil yeilds more nutrious veggies. Many large organic growing operations yield vegetables with low nutritional content due to the lack of minerials in and health of the soil.
In addition to using compost tea made from cow manue, composted chicken droppings are used for fertilizing plants. Stewart Farms utilize the deep litter method with local wood shavings for chicken coop bedding. Cleanup is easy. In a nutshell, you add to the bedding regularly, but only clean out the coop 1 time a year. Since the composting process is ongoing, upon cleanout, it’s ready to add directly to the gardens.
Support Natural Selection
Plants that survive drought, hard freezes and local pests become hardier. Animals will cull the weaker. Natural selection , survival of the fittest. results in stronger herd/flock/crops with better genetics over time.

Lann Stewart
Stewart Farm’s YouTube channel ‘From Pavement to Pasture‘ perfectly describes the Stewart family journey from city living to rural Alabama. Positive benefits of raising a family in a beautiful, country setting and the ability to become more self-reliant, were prime motivating factors that led to this significant life change.
Lann, a Southern gent from Virginia, is well read, well travelled and a philosopher at heart. He’s an adventurer who has a thirst to live life to the fullest no matter the task at hand.
A visit to Connemara, Carl Sanburg’s farm in North Carolina, inspired Lann to raise goats. Sanburg’s wife raised award winning goats. After several years, Stewart Farm transitioned to raising sheep. The experience, nonetheless, was interesting. In a nostalgic nod to the naval ship tradition of keeping Bantam chickens onboard for eggs, Bantams were the first breed added to Stewart Farm. Other breeds have now been added to the flock. You will find Lann is always trying new things, adapting and learning from the experience.
