A Passion for Farming
Meet
Market Manager,
Mac Washington
Mac Washington is the Vernon Farmers Market Manager. He became the manager in 2018 when he retired from the Lamar County Extension Office. He has been very involved since the beginning of the market when it was formed back in 2008.
Mac’s great grandfather began farming near Carrollton in Pickens County and was the 1st in his family to own land. Mac’s grandfather, his father and Mac, himself, continued the farming tradition. The love of farming strongly influenced his focus on education. He obtained an Associate Degree in Agriculture from Bevil State College, a BS in Agriculture from Alabama A&M in Huntsville. He was then awarded a scholarship to Ohio State University, where he received his Masters Degree in Agriculture and Economics.
In 1979 after completing his Masters Degree, Mac began his career with the Lamar County Extension Office. In his early years there, he worked closely with the 4H. Mac became the Lamar County Agriculture Agent in 1995, a position he held until he retired in 2018. Agriculture, education and the community, all have a big place in his heart. Mac has helped countless people in his life and continues to do so on a daily basis. He puts a lot of effort into keeping the market up and going, with much help from his dedicated vendors. They work closely together as a team.
Thanks to the strong support from the core group of venders, the folks in the community, and Vernon Mayor Glenn Crawford, the Vernon Farmers Market is going strong.
